Before they were able to board the train, his father was arrested and eventually killed as a political prisoner. In 1948, his difficult journey through Europe ended when he came to Canada with his mother and grandmother (Matrona Sokach). Fr. Andrew finished high school in Canada and responded to his calling by studying theology at St. Andrews College. In 1954, he married Halia Lypka, was ordained as a deacon and then into the priesthood. From 1954 to 1994, Fr. Andrew served in many parishes across Canada. He moved his family from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. He was known for his interesting and thought provoking sermons. He was actively involved in many organizations and was especially passionate when working with the youth; acting as chaplain & teacher for CYMK (Ukrainian Orthodox Youth), Sunday School, Ukrainian School and summer camps. Some of the other organizations in which he was an active member include the Order of St. Andrew and the Society of Volyn. In January of 1994, Fr. Andrew suffered his first stroke. His perseverance and determination brought him much improvement. In 1996, he suffered a second stroke and fought hard to walk again. The last few years, he enjoyed many of the simple pleasures such as: reading, listening to music, attending church, enjoying social gatherings with friends and family, and was especially happy to spend time with his grandchildren. Commencement of the Funeral Rite will be sung on Sunday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral (820 Burrows Ave).
