SVAVA McCORQUODALE Peacefully on Tuesday, November 21, 2000 at the Lions Prairie Manor, Svava McCorquodale (Bergson) passed away at the age of 98 years. At Svavas request, cremation has taken place. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2000 at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, with Rev. Ross Taylor officiating. Svava was the last survivor of the Bergson family, which immigrated from Iceland to Canada in 1905. The family travelled by ship, rail and finally ox-cart to their homestead on the shore of Lake Manitoba in the Leifur district near Amaranth. Following her early education, Svava moved to Winnipeg where she was employed by the Hudson Bay Company. In Winnipeg, she met and married Elmo McCorquodale, her husband of 45 years. Following Elmos retirement in 1961, as Chief License Inspector for the city of Winnipeg, Elmo and Svava travelled extensively throughout North America and Europe. They often spent winters in Mexico and summers camping and fishing in Northern Manitoba. Their home was always open to family and friends. In addition, Svava provided unending care to sisters-in-law Mattie and Rena. She moved to Portage la Prairie in 1986. Svava was predeceased by her mother Gaudlaug in 1921, her father Sigurdur in 1928, and her husband Elmo, a veteran of the First World War, in 1984. From her immediate family, she was predeceased by sisters Emma and Beatrice, and brothers Cyril, Archie, Karl, Olafur and Allan. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Steve Bergson and wife Joyce of Portage la Prairie. The family wished to extend a special note of appreciation to the caregivers at the Lions Prairie Manor for the excellent care Aunt Svava received during the past nine years. Should family and friends desire, donations may be made in Svavas memory to the Beckville Cemetery Maintenance Fund, c/o Diane McLaughlin, Box 20, Amaranth, MB., R0H 0B0 The Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, in care of the arrangements.
