MARY ANNE LAING (WATSON) Peacefully, on Saturday, November 25, 2000 at the Lions Prairie Manor, Portage la Prairie, Mary Anne Laing, of Portage la Prairie, widow of the late Charlie Laing, passed away at the age of 87 years. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home, Portage la Prairie, on Wednesday, November 29 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ross Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at Elm Creek Cemetery. Mary was born in Rossendale to parents, John and Jane Anne Watson. She was a dedicated teacher starting her career in Allandale (her home district) then moving to the Wingham District where she met and married Charlie Laing on November 11, 1944. Together they farmed at Elm Creek until Charlies death in 1975. Mary continued to live on the farm until she moved to Portage la Prairie. In her younger days, she participated in baseball, skating, curling and card games. Mary also loved music and dancing. She took several trips after retiring from farming and enjoyed many happy times at special events with family and friends. She was a member of the U.C.W. both in Elm Creek and Portage and also was a member of the Ruth Rebekah Lodge #3. One of her favourite pastimes was gardening at the farm, as well she took great pride in her flowers in Portage. She is survived by her sister Alice Fraser of Winnipeg; sisters-in-law, Margaret Watson and Eva Watson of Portage la Prairie; her brother-in-law Preston McIntosh of Portage la Prairie and Max (Winnie) Laing of Elm Creek; sisters-in-law, Alice Parkinson of Winnipeg and Lois Wynne of Elm Creek, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to Trinity United Church, 15 Tupper Street South, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1W7 or Lions Prairie Manor Foundation, 24-9th Street N.E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3V4. The family would like to thank all the staff on "Walker Road" at the Lions Prairie Manor for all there faithful service. The Omega Funeral Home, Portage la Prairie, is in care of the arrangements.
