DONALD NELS EK Donald Nels Ek, of Portage la Prairie, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 29, 2000 after a long and difficult illness. He was born in Dauphin, Manitoba on September 25, 1923. Don received his early education in Amaranth and moved to Portage la Prairie in 1936 where he attended Portage Collegiate. He served in the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War, stationed in Canada and worked for the Canadian National Railway as well as Astbury Manufacturers before being employed by the Province of Manitoba for 27 years as a power engineer at the Agassiz Center for Youth. Don played fastball with the Portage Mercurys and was part of a number of Provincial Championship teams. He was also actively involved in coaching hockey at the North Side Athletic Club and coached baseball with the Rotary Indians/Dodgers. In his latter years, he played slow pitch with the Sloans Liniment League. Carpentry and painting were avid hobbies. After his retirement, he devoted many years to caretaking at Rotary Housing and found pleasure in a new hobby of "folk art". Don was a devoted father and grandfather providing many positive memories. He is survived by his brothers Gordon and Fred; his daughter Noreen (Tony) of Brandon and granddaughter Nissa Esler (Dean) and great-grandsons Jacob and Samuel; his son Danny (Darlene) and grandchildren Cody and Chastity; his daughter Lori of Portage; his son Barry (Bev) of Brandon and grandchildren Brianne and Bradley; his son Jan (Dany) of Montreal; and Shirley, of Portage, who remained a support in his life and her mother Gladys Simmons of Kelowna; as well as special neighbours and friends Irene, John, Debbie, Donna, Kyle and Vince, who were all important in his life. He will be missed by all of us. Don was predeceased by his parents Rose and Ted and father-in-law Art Simmons. A family graveside service will be held in Portage la Prairie at the Hillside Cemetery. The family expresses gratitude to Rideau Park Personal Care Home for the warm and dedicated care they provided.
