MARGARET THORA NOWELL (nee HILLMAN) On December 7, 2000 Margaret Thora Nowell (nee Hillman) passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospital at age 94. Left to cherish her memory are her son Jim and her daughter Mary; her daughter-in-law Carol; son-in-law Charles Birt and her beloved grandsons, John Nowell (Mandy Guest), Glen Nowell (Carly), Taylor Birt, Cameron Birt, Graeme Birt, and her brother-in-law Harry Bulmer. Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband Gilbert in 1969 and their three year old son John in 1937; her parents; her sister Thelma Bulmer, and her brothers, Oscar and Alex Hillman. Margaret was born into Winnipegs Icelandic community and was a proud and independent spirit. Marg and Gil enjoyed 32 years of marriage. They were involved at the beginnings of Westworth United Church, the Air Cadet movement and the Winnipeg Optimist Club. Her family was the centre of her life. She supported Jim and Mary in all their activities and they became her support in her latter years. Her five grandsons were her greatest joy and she loved them unconditionally. The family would like to thank Dr. Douglas Birt, Dr. Wayne Van Horne and the Homecare workers who helped her maintain her independence until her final days. A special thanks to June for her daily care and compassion. A celebration of Margaret Nowells life will be held on Tuesday, December 12 at 12:30 at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice or to the Sunshine Fund, one of her favourites.
