AGNES RUBY POITRAS Agnes Ruby Poitras (nee McMillan) peacefully went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Saturday, December 9, 2000 at the Central Park Lodge in Brandon. Agnes was born September 5, 1911 in Souris, MB, the daughter of David Wesley and Eliza Madeline McMillan. In 1922 they moved from Souris to Swan River. After high school Agnes studied nursing, graduating from the Brandon General Hospital as a registered nurse in 1933. She did private duty nursing from 1933 to October 17, 1937, when she married Joseph Elmer Poitras. They lived in Ottawa until Elmer enlisted in the army, when Agnes returned to Swan River, nursing in the hospital there until 1945, when Elmer returned from the war. Agnes and Elmer enjoyed living in Sherridon, MB, making many lifelong friends; they moved with the town to Lynn Lake in 1952. After brief stints in Atitokan and Swan River between 1953 and 1959, they returned to Lynn Lake, staying until Elmers retirement in 1973. Brandon was decided upon as their retirement city. Agnes was a warm and hospitable woman. How she loved making dinner for family and friends! Agnes loved the fellowship with her friends at Brandon Calvary Temple; it was a very important part of her life. She enjoyed the outdoors - especially canoeing, boating, and fishing. But her special love was for her children and grandchildren. Agnes was predeceased by her husband Elmer in 1984; also by her parents, David Wesley and Eliza Madeline McMillan; brother Bill McMillan; sisters, Ethel McMillan and Eva Waterhouse; and daughter-in-law Carolyn. She is survived and lovingly missed by her three sons, James Elmer of Edmonton, AB, Joseph Gordon (Beverly) of Russell, MB and Kenneth Wesley (Marye) of Hilbre, MB; grandsons, Benjamin (Monica), Joseph, and Michael; granddaughter Zoe; sister Mary Lang of Brandon; sister-in-law Lila McMillan of Swan River; and by her nieces and nephews to whom she was always a special auntie. The family wishes to give special thanks to all those who faithfully visited Agnes during her long stay in the hospital and the care home. Your visits were an encouragement to Agnes, and to us, her children. Funeral service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Tuesday, December 12 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Greg Foley officiating. Interment to follow at Brandon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Agnes may be made to the Calvary Temple, 620-34th Street, Brandon, MB R7B 2R5, or to the Gideons, Box 20060, Brandon, MB, R7A 5Y8. Arrangements are in care of Brockie Donovan, 1-800-897-5694.
