JAMES AIKMAN Peacefully on December 11, 2000 at the Saint Boniface Hospital, aged 84 years. James, or Jim as he was known to all his friends, was born in Glasgow, Scotland on December 12, 1916, the oldest of four sons. He spent the early years of his life there until his parents immigrated to Canada in 1923. He first lived in Alberta before moving to Manitoba where he grew up in Transcona. He is predeceased by his mother Stuart; and his father James; as well as his two youngest brothers, Kenneth and Gordon Murray. James leaves to mourn his wife of 52 years, Dorothy; his brother Hugh (Hazel) his four sons, Stuart, Donald, Craig and Darryl; his grandchildren, Sean, Neil, Dustin, Trevor, Ashleigh, Kyle, Kirsten, Dominic, and Tyler all of whom he loved dearly. He also leaves to mourn his cousin, May (James) Weir back in Scotland as well as sisters-in-law, Mary and Evelyn; many nephews and nieces; daughters-in-law and friends. Jim worked for Eatons for 36 years, taking time off to fight in the Second World War where he served in the RCAF in Scotland and Belgium. Upon returning from the war, he resumed his civilian career at Eatons and was married to his wife, Dorothy in 1948. When he finally retired from Eatons in 1972, he went to work in the library at the University of Winnipeg where he stayed for five years. He became a Canadian citizen in 1974. After his retirement, he made several trips back to Scotland as well as to the southern U.S.. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and during federal elections, worked on behalf of the Liberal party of Canada. During his latter years he loved to do crossword puzzles to keep his mind active after surviving two heart operations. Jim was a man of few words but a wealth of knowledge, whom when he spoke, everyone listened. He loved to entertain being a pianist who played by ear. He also played the bagpipes with his father in his youth. Following cremation there will be a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, in the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, with Captain Mary Wray officiating. The family would like to thank the staff of the St. Boniface Hospital for their care of our father, especially the A wings of the 5th and 7th floors as well as the emergency ward.
