JOHN WILLIAM OLEARY "Uncle Jack" Peacefully, on December 20, 2000, John William OLeary (affectionately known as "Uncle Jack") passed away at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife Edna; his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Al Thomas of San Antonio, Texas; his granddaughter Megan Thomas of San Antonio, Texas; Ron and Rina Maidment; his Godson Michael Maidment (and Angie) and his "nieces" Andrea Knapp (and Ken). Lynne Gauthier, Janet Ingelbeen and Julie Wall (and Brent) and their families. Jack was born in Dublin, Ireland on October 24, 1917 and as a child, moved with his parents, John and Julia OLeary to Winnipeg. He was one of Manitobas top tennis and badminton players and enjoyed coaching womens softball. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1940 to 1946. Jack fondly remembered his days of employment and his friends at Eatons and United Grain Growers. He continued to look forward to his monthly UGG Meetings. Thank you to those of Jacks friends who kept in touch over the years. Uncle Jack will sadly be missed by his "second family" the Maidments. To the Maidments, he played an integral role as Godfather, uncle and friend. Jack enjoyed several trips to Disneyland with his godson, Michael, shopping with Rina and spending countless hours with the Maidment family. Special thanks go out to Dr. Harris, the staff of 4W at the Grace General Hospital and the Cancer Care Centre at Health Sciences Centre. Upon his request, there will not be a memorial service.
