MYRTAL L. CHRISTIE Myrtal L. Christie, widow of the late Harry Christie, passed away peacefully at the Lions Prairie Manor on Sunday, December 24, 2000, at the age of 95 years. Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Saturday, December 30, 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Ross Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at the Oakville Cemetery. Myrtal was born the daughter of Wesley and Elsbeth Thompson on January 31, 1905 in the Elm River district, southwest of Oakville. Myrtal was the oldest of a family of three girls. She took her schooling at the Elm River and Oakville schools. After finishing school, she worked for a number of years at Bob Lees store and also at Johnny Walkers bakery. Myrtal married Harry Christie on December 29, 1936 and began her married life in Oakville. Myrtal continually lived in Oakville until December 1996. After suffering a stroke in December 1996, she became a resident of the Lions Prairie Manor in Portage la Prairie and resided there until her death. Throughout her married life and raising a family, Myrtal found time to be employed for numerous years as a Telephone Operator with the Manitoba Telephone System. After working for a number of years at the telephone office in Oakville, she started work at the Post Office and continued this employment for a number of years. After retirement, she enjoyed many hours tatting and crocheting as well as cooking for family that would pop in to have a visit. Myrtal was often visiting her sister, Hazel, who also lived in Oakville. Her large yard and flower beds were always a pleasure for her. Her home was always open to anyone travelling though Oakville and became the over-night home for many friends and relatives. It was always a pleasure for Myrtal when someone dropped in for a visit whether at her home in Oakville or after she became a resident of the Lions Prairie Manor. Throughout the years, her family and relatives were always first on her list, especially her seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Myrtal was predeceased by her parents, Wesley and Elsbeth Thompson and sisters, Lena in 1941 and Hazel in 1998. Her husband, Harry, passed away in February 1978. Myrtal is survived by her son Wayne (Lynne) of Portage la Prairie; and granddaughter Darlene (Terry) Putz; great-grandchildren Aaron and Christie all of Winnipeg; granddaughter Bonnie of Vancouver; grandson Rob of Winnipeg. Son Garth (Susan) grandchildren Sean, Shannon, Stephanie and Simon all of Winnipeg. Also numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Lions Prairie Manor Foundation Inc., 24-9th Street NE, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3V4 or the charity of ones choice. The Omega Funeral Home, Portage la Prairie, is in charge of the arrangements.
