STEFANIA NOWAK Peacefully, on January 2, 2001, Stefania Nowak, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away at the Health Sciences Centre. Stefania was born on January 22, 1926 in Wierzchy, a village in the vicinity of Lodz, Poland. Her parents were Walenty and Bronislawa Dominiak. Grandma Stefania came from a large family, whose only surviving member is Zofia Kobus of Lodz, Poland. Stefanias formal schooling ended in 1939 with the beginning of the Second World War. Grandma was deported to Germany and served as a forced labourer. While in Germany, Stefania met and married her husband, Stanislaw Nowak. Their first daughter Lucyna was born to them in Hohenfelz, Germany in 1947. Stefania moved with her husband and daughter in 1950 to Winnipeg. It was Grandpas sister Louise Wangen who sponsored Stanislaw, Stefania and Lucynas arrival in Canada. Once in Canada, Stefania worked at a variety of occupations to support her family. The Nowak family grew with Jeans arrival in 1951 and Wiktors (Viks) arrival in 1955. Stefania was a longtime member of the Sokol Polish Gymnastics Association. As well, Stefania attended both Saint Andrew Bobola and St. Marys Polish National Catholic Church on Burrows Avenue. Stefania was also kept busy visiting her grandkids, starting in 1975 with Steven Navratils arrival. Her granddaughters, Leah Nowak and Jenna Nowak arrived in 1987 and 1990, respectively. Her youngest grandson Mathew Nowak was born in 1997. Stefania will be sadly missed by her children, Lucyna (Victor) Navratil of Water Valley, Alta., Jean Nowak of Winnipeg, Viktor Nowak (Cathy Richards) of Fort Frances, Ont.; four grandchildren, Steven Navratil, and Leah, Jenna and Mathew Nowak; her sister Zofia Kobus of Lodz, Poland and other relatives in Poland and Canada. She was predeceased by her loving husband Stanley Nowak in 1993. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation for the care and compassion given Grandma by the doctors and nurses at the Health Sciences Centre. A Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 6 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Marys Polish National Catholic Church, 361 Burrows Ave. with Very Rev. Msgr. Wesley Cwieka officiating. Interment will follow in St. Marys Polish National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Stefanias memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St., Wpg., R3B 2H8. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL in care of arrangements, 586-8044.
