COLIN WALLACE McDONALD Colin Wallace McDonald was born in Winnipeg on May 23, 1907, the second son of Colin Alexander McDonald and Kate Wyton. Altogether he had six brothers and two sisters. He received his education in Winnipeg, and upon leaving school, worked for his father at the McDonald Detective Agency both in the office and in the field. Later on he pursued a career on the Winnipeg Fire Department, where he worked for 34 years, retiring as Captain of No. 14 Station at Lipton and Westminster. During these years he worked at each and every Station, rode rescue for nine years and was very proud that he drove for the District Chief for 14 years without a single accident. He also worked very hard to compile a textbook for Rookie Fire Fighters. In 1938 Colin married the love of his life, Jean Winnifred Douglas. To this union were born two children, Sheila and Stewart. Colin had many talents, all self taught. He build furniture with his wood lathe, built his own home on Carpathia; finished the next home on Sharp Boulevard, laid cement driveways, shingled roofs, built kitchen cupboards and enjoyed landscaping. After retiring to Courtney, B.C. he spent his hours with his fruit trees, roses and hanging baskets. If asked, his favourite project was probably the summer cottage he built at Long Bow Lake, east of Kenora, ON that he called "Deer Horn". From 1963 to 1975 he and Jean spent their summers here fishing, swimming and enjoying friends. Colin enjoyed dancing and he and Jean went to many dances in their youth. He also enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather and always worked hard for the benefit of his loved ones. Colin was predeceased by his parents; wife Jean in 1997; aunt Gus; brothers, Ken, George, Don, Roy and two infant siblings. Left to cherish his memory is his daughter Sheila (Don) Bell and children Alana (Dallas) and grandchildren Lane and Latisha Louttit, Heather (Art Penning) Bell, Carolyn (Rob) Brown, Duncan (Tara) Bell; son Stewart (Mary Ann) McDonald and children Steven (Angel) McDonald, Michael and Allana McDonald; brothers, Doug (Chris), Bruce (Betty) sisters Dorothy (Al) Goetz and Marguerite (Doug) McCawley. To all who were graced by Colins life, his unique sense of humour, one-liners and little "ditties" will always make us smile. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 6 at 2:00 p.m. in the Coultervale United Church, Coulter, Man. Rev. Mark Satterly will officiate with interment at Coultervale Cemetery. Arrangements in care of Redpath Funeral Home, 204-522-3361.
