Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOYCE GILCHRIST PIPES Died December 20, 2000. Born March 24, 1921 in Winnipeg, MB, Canada the youngest of 11 children. Preceded in death by parents, Duncan and Eliza Ann Gilchrist, spouse Stanley Pipes, and siblings, Archie, Nan, Betty, Leslie, Jean, Ted, Mary, Dorothy, and Lorne. Survived by brother Harry Gilchrist; son Paul Pipes (wife Mary Kay) daughter Janet Pipes; grandchildren, Serene Barrett, Tyler Pipes, Jacob Pipes, and Sam Pipes; great-grandson, Brennan Barrett, and numerous nephews, nieces and extended family. She immigrated to the United States in 1954 when her husband became a student at the University of Washington. As an accomplished weaver she helped support the family during his student years. Thereafter she served the community of the disadvantaged and disabled as a job developer and counselor through Seattle Opportunities Industrialization Center, Seattle Hearing, Speech and Deafness Center, Projects with Industry, Mott Rehabilitation Services, Center for Addiction Services, Seattle Mental Health Institute, United Control Corporation, and others until poor health forced her to retire in 1992. In 1974 she graduated from Seattle University. Her volunteer activities included board membership for the National Rehabilitation Association/Puget Sound Charter, COYOTE, Second Growth Institute, Conquest Center, and the Governors Committee for Employment of the Handicapped. Her avid interest and appreciation of all artistic mediums continued throughout her lifetime including participation in the study of Ikebana during recent years. In lieu of flowers the family of Joyce Gilchrist Pipes requests that donations be made in her memory to Northwest Kidney Foundation, P.O. Box 3035, Seattle, WA 98114 or Group Health Community Foundation, P.O. Box 34936, Dept. 4194, Seattle, WA 98124-1936. Please specify that your donation is for the benefit of kidney dialysis patients. A Celebration of Joyces Life will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2001, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Silver Glen Retirement Center, 1750 152nd N.E., Bellevue, WA. Please RSVP to 425-778-3707.
