Calvin was born in Plum Coulee, MB on February 7, 1922. He received his formal education in the Plum Coulee school. He was called upon to serve his country in 1941 and was posted to Victoria, BC. Following the end of the war, Calvin returned to Plum Coulee and became an active community participant. As a Town Councillor, Charter Member of the Plum Coulee Kinsmen Association and other organizations throughout the area Calvin provided positive leadership in order to enhance the quality of life for his community. Those who knew Calvin know of his love of sports. This came genuinely to him as a former member of the Winkler Royals and the Plum Coulee baseball team. Following his retirement from active sports, he was able to give back to the community as a coach for minor hockey and baseball, both in Plum Coulee and in Winnipeg, instilling in his players good sportsmanship and fair play. He also was an active curler and loved a good round of golf. Throughout his life Calvins commitment to active church service was very important to him. His service to Trinity Lutheran Church, Winkler, MB, Hope Lutheran Church, Winnipeg, Peace Lutheran Church, Winnipeg, and Immanuel Lutheran Church, Winnipeg, provided him with daily strength and a strong Christian community of friends. In 1968, Calvin and Vega moved to Winnipeg. Calvin was employed by the Peerless Carbon and Ribbon Company, Liquid Paper Corporation, Gregory Cartwright Stationers, and Atlas Carbon and Ribbon Company. Each of these employment opportunities established lifelong friends which always remained special to him. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Calvin D. Mantey and the hope of the resurrection, will be held on Tuesday, January 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2528 King Edward with the Rev. Jan Pastucha officiating.
