AGNES BAKER On January 12, 2001 at the Health Sciences Centre, Agnes Baker passed away at the age of 88 years. Agnes was born at Martindale, PQ in 1912. There she attended Separate Schools to grade nine. She spent her high school at the Notre Dame Convent, Ottawa where she graduated. She entered the Grey Sisters Noviate in Pembrooke where she remained for three years. Agnes left the convent due to ill health. There was always a thorn in her heart, as she loved religious life. In 1938 Agnes married Herbert Baker and they had three children by whom she is lovingly remembered: Gary (Linda) of British Columbia, Charlotte (Melvin) of Red Lake, ON, and Glen in Winnipeg; and three grandchildren. Agnes and Herbert moved to Balmertown in 1948. She belonged to St. Frances Xavier Parish, Balmertown and Red Lake Legion Auxiliary where she was president for three terms. Agnes belonged to the Red Lake Hospital Guild, was secretary of the Boy Scout Association, served in many capacities in the Catholic Womens League and Parish Council. She was an ardent member of the Liberal Association. Agnes taught Catechism for 15 years at the St. Francis Xavier Church. She opened a private tutoring service and taught many girls who are still working in offices. In 1976 she was predeceased by her husband Herbert. Agnes moved to Winnipeg in 1983, she was a very active lay minister at St. Marys Cathedral. She belonged to the adult enrichment league, was a member of Age and Opportunity for 15 years, Creative Retirement and Home Bound, where she was still working until her death. Funeral Mass will be said at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 16, at St. Marys Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Ave., with Fr. Darrin J.G. Gurr. Committal Assumption Cemetery.
