Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryKATRIN SIGURBJORG (KAYE) BRECKMAN On January 12, 2001, Mom (Amma) passed away peacefully at Calvary Place at the age of 94. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Tom (Judy) Breckman, Bill (Carol) Breckman, Sandra (Grant) Fisette; grandchildren, Todd, Jo (Marianne), Tricia (Trevor), Krista (Greg), Tara, Keith (Jennifer), Jody (Darren) and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Kristin, Kelly, Colin, Brennan, Ryan, Justin, Stephanie, Vanessa, Connor, Kierstyn; sister Helga (Jim) Block and brother Hannes (Kristin) Thomasson; sisters-in-law, Herborg Thomasson, Bina Ingimundson, Margaret Mack and extended family member Pearl Eyford as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Gudlaugur (Slivers) Breckman; her parents, Arnie and Ingun Thomasson; sisters, Gunna Thomasson, Emma (Leo) Danielson, Rosa (Hjortur) Hjartarson; brothers, Jonatan, Thomas, Paul, Steini Thomasson and adopted brother Beggi Hallgrimsson. Born January 1, 1907 at 1-6 (Brown, MB) she attended Elm Creek and Lindal Schools and then went on to Manitou to attend Normal School. She lived in a rooming house with five other girls and they were known as the Carscadan Six, with whom she always kept in touch. She accepted her first teaching position in the Lundar area. Here she met her husband Slivers, the love of her life, and in 1935 was married in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Emma and Leo Danielson. The ceremony took place in the yard of the Thomasson homestead where she was born. Kaye and Slivers settled in Lundar to work and raise their family. They loved dancing and loved to sing. They sang in the Lundar Lutheran Church Choir for many years. She especially loved car rides and berry picking. In 1961, after Slivers tragic death, Kaye returned to the work force. At 55 years, with two children still at home, she got her drivers license and began working at Breckman Bros. Store with her brother-in-law Walter. When the store closed, she returned to her teaching career at Morning Star, Helendale, Swan Creek and Lundar Schools. Kaye was known as a wonderful cook and she loved to have people over for coffee and baking. She welcomed teachers from far and wide to room at her home and cook for them. Nothing was too much work. She was very artistic and used this talent when she would provide the most beautiful decorations for the community bridal showers. Every job she took on, she made sure was done to perfection. Kaye was very proud of her Icelandic heritage and belonged to the Icelandic National League for many years. Kaye had the true pioneer spirit and determination. She survived falling through the ice on a skating pond as a young girl and being shot by a careless friend while working on a neighbours farm and her drive for life has kept her going through her illness this past year. In the fall of 2000, she still managed to dance at her great-nephews wedding while in her wheel chair. She never wanted to miss a party. She maintained her quick wit and good humour until her last moments. Kayes greatest love was for her family. Treating each one equally special, was very important to her. Mom (Amma) was happiest when surrounded by all her children and their families. Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, January 15, at the Lundar Lutheran Church, Lundar, Man., with Pastor Ingthor Isfeld officiating. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment to follow in the Lundar Municipal Cemetery. Pallbearers are her nephews, Michael Danielson, Jim Thorsteinson, John Breckman, Arnie Thomasson, Doug Thomasson and Brandon Block. Honorary pallbearers will be all her other nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Dorothy, Michael, Judy and their families for their love and support given to Mom and our family. Special thanks also to the Home Care workers that cared for Mom while staying at Caddy Lake and Lundar and to the First Floor staff and residents at Calvary Place Personal Care Home who were wonderful friends as well as care givers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Calvary Place Personal Care Home, 1325 Erin St., Winnipeg, MB R3E 3R6 or the Lundar Lutheran Church, General Delivery, Lundar, MB R0C 1Y0.
