Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJERRY ALPHONSO CUMMINGS Jerry was born on June 9, 1930 in Industry, Guyana, South America, died suddenly January 13, 2001. The second of 12 children to Joshua and Evelyn Cummings. Married in 1954 to Hulbertina and immigrated to England in 1956. He worked at FH Wheelers and British Rail as an electrician. He also studied electrical engineering at Hackney Technical College. He and his family moved to Winnipeg in July, 1967. He was employed by CP Rail until 1990 at which time he retired. His passion for helping others also led him to hold down a part-time job at St. Boniface General Hospital as an orderly. He was an active member of The Independent Order of English Mechanics Preston Unity and reached the highest level attainable in the order. In later years after suffering a hearing loss, he became involved with the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association Manitoba Chapter and the Winnipeg League for the Hard of Hearing. He was a mentor, teacher and advocate for the hearing impaired and related issues. He loved reading, travelling, tinkering with old machinery and was a natural public speaker. His interest in a variety of world wide issues, enhanced his pursuit of higher learning at the U of W well into his 60s. He believed that one of his missions in life was to help anyone that needed it no matter what the circumstance. He was a gentleman and always gracious to everyone he encountered along the way, traits that made him well respected and liked. He was a devoted, caring father and husband and leaves to mourn his loving wife Hulbertina; children, Merleen (Dennis), Jerry, Jackie (Athol), Andrea; and special nieces, Desiree and Eletha (Louis) who grew up with the family; grandchildren, Valerie, Tawnya, Madilynne, Jason, Louis Michael and Calvin; sisters, Mel (Winnipeg), Vera (Toronto), Eunice, Beryl (United States) brothers, Joshua (Lucy) of Winnipeg, Percy (Guyana) and many, many other close relatives and friends. Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Joshua and Evelyn Cummings and brothers, Donald, Edwin and Clifton. We would like to thank the Fire Department First Responders and Ambulance. Also staff, especially Janet at Concordia Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Hard of Hearing Assoc. Manitoba Chapter care of SMD, 825 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB. Viewing Sunday, January 21, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service Monday, January 22, 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Chapel. "Hell always be remembered as a man, both strong and good. Who gave his best for others and who did the best he could. Hell always be remembered for all the joy he brought, as a man who made a difference and a man who meant a lot."
