NORMAN ALEXANDER SMITH Passed away at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on January 12, 2001. Norman was born in Winnipeg on July 13, 1915 and shortly afterward moved with his family to Davis Point on Lake Manitoba. He remained there until joining the army in 1942, serving as a tank driver in the liberation of Holland. Following the war, he was employed as an underground miner for seven years in Favourable Lake, Ont. and in Bralorne, B.C. Upon returning to Winnipeg, he was employed at Canada Malting Co., T. Eaton Co. and lastly as a postal dispatcher for Canada Post. He retired to Ladysmith, B.C. in 1978 and enjoyed his retirement with family and friends, fishing, golfing, travelling and most of all reading. He is survived by and deeply missed by his wife of 54 years, Elsie; daughter Judith Ann (David) Beer; sons, Norman James (Heather) and Robert Gordon. He was a cherished grandpa and papa to his grandchildren, Gordon and Robert Merkel, Bruce and Robyn Smith and Alexa, Arielle and Shelby Smith. He was predeceased by his parents Norman and Mary Smith, as well as by his only brother Gordon. A memorial service will be held in First United Church, Ladysmith on Saturday January 20 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to his favourite charity, the Christian Blind Mission International, P.O. Box 800, Stouffville, Ont., L4A 7Z9 or to any branch of the Salvation Army.
