Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMICHAEL KUSTRA It is with the familys deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Michael Kustra. After a very lengthy illness, Michael gave up his battle at the Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, January 21, 2001. Michael was born on December 29, 1918, the only son of Paul and Julia Kustra who at the time were new arrivals from the Ukraine. The family resided on Alfred Ave., later relocating to a farm southwest of St. Claude, Man. shortly before the depression. Michael is survived by his wife Helen of 53 years of marriage; sons, Wayne, Guy (fiancee Bonnie Lynn) and Curtis (wife Kathy) daughters, Allyn and Cheryl; grandchildren, Carlene (Dave), Amanda, Melissa, Aynsley, Tara, Matthew, Tanya (Bill), Cassandra, Shane; great-grandchildren, Syd and Sean. Michael is also survived by his only sister Jenny Littlechild; brothers-in-law Cornelius, Peter and John Goertzen and many nieces and nephews throughout Canada. Michael was predeceased by his daughter Diane, Evelyne, parents Paul and Julia and sisters; Anne, Mary and Nellie. Michael was held in the highest respect by his employers, family, friends and neighbours for his honest, hardworking ability, stamina, big heart, his unique sense of humour and his love for his wife and children. Michael was a man of substance and reality and common sense - he was not a dreamer. He knew what had to be accomplished and always found a way to accomplish it. From a young boy of Ukrainian Heritage from the north end of Winnipeg he went on to become a farmer, served his duty in the Second World War with the Winnipeg Rifles, married his wife Helen in 1948 and worked as a mechanic, Bartender, Carpenter, C.P. Railway and put several years of service in with the City of Winnipeg Parks Board, most of which were spent at Brookside Cemetery, finally retiring with the City of Winnipeg Swimming Pool Division. Even though your big old house will feel somewhat empty without your physical presence, your family will always cherish those special moments and occasions and keep the guidance, love and respect you gave us in our hearts forever. In keeping with Michaels wishes, cremation will precede a memorial service at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Avenue, Aubrey Street entrance on Wednesday, January 24 at 10:30 a.m. An interment of ashes to be announced at a later date will take place at Brookside Cemetery.
