Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELEN MITCHELL HAY Peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2001, Helen (Nellie) Hay passed away at the Victoria General Hospital, at the age of 98 years. Helen was born September 6, 1902 in Newmacher, Scotland, the eldest child of Thomas Davidson and Mary (Gray) Davidson. At the age of five she came to Canada with her parents where they farmed near Elie, MB. While visiting in Winnipeg, Helen met another transplanted Scot, George Winton Hay, and they married in 1931. Helen "retired" from the Health Sciences Centre Dietary Department in 1973 and then became a volunteer with the White Cross Guild at H.S.C. In 1989 she was recognized for her 1000 hours of volunteer work. She was also a Life Member of the Sons of Scotland, Melrose Camp No. 126. In her "Golden Years" Helen loved to travel. She made a memorable trip back to her birthplace in Scotland and visited with family there. Other adventures were trips to Alaska, California and twice she travelled by train to Churchill to see the polar bears. Helen is survived by her daughter Lilian (Charles) Cords of Grandview, MB; grandchildren, Bruce (Phebe) Christian of Lloydminster, AB, Suraya (Susan) Christian and partner Peter Marks of Thompson, MB, Mark Christian of Winnipeg; great-grandchildren Benjamin, Stephen, Daniel, Leanna and Cassandra Christian and Jasmin Maria Marks. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband George in 1967 and her brother Charles Davidson and sister Lillian Leslie. A Service of Remembrance will be held in Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1858 Portage Ave. for family and friends at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff at 285 Pembina, Home Care, especially Cheryl, the Charleswood Adult Day Club and the members of Melrose Camp No. 126 for their care and concern for Helen.
