GRETA NELLIE BISSELL (HAYMAN) (nee BIGGERSTAFF) Following a lengthy battle with Alzheimers disease, at 11:00 p.m. on February 4, 2001, her daughter by her side, Greta, aged 85 years, a resident of the Salvation Army Golden West Centennial Lodge, rested at peace. Born in Winnipeg, Greta attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and married her childhood sweetheart, Frank Hayman. They had one daughter. In 1944 Frank was killed in action in Holland while serving with the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders. As a result, Greta returned to work while raising her daughter, as a single parent. She held positions with the Income Tax Department, Government of Canada, City of East Kildonan, Hudsons Bay Company, and spent over 25 years with the Province of Manitoba within Surrogate and Family Court. In 1957 she married Francis Hugh Bissell, a loyal, understanding mate with whom she shared a passionate love. They built a home at Glad Lake, Man., and spent happy times together in the wilderness Frank held so dear. Unfortunately, Greta was again widowed when Frank died suddenly in May 1971. Greta was a woman of unmitigated talent who gave unconditional love to her friends and family but a woman who never thought of herself as special. Greta was predeceased by her mother Ellen Ballard Biggerstaff in 1963, her eldest sister Natalie Anita Parkinson in 1948 and her sister Royal Iris Johnston in 1967. She is survived by her daughter Carol Anita and her son-in-law Eric George Cox. A service of remembrance will be held on Monday, February 12 at 2:30 p.m. in the St. Andrews Woodhaven Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, with Rev. Ian Mills officiating. A special thanks to the staff at Golden West Centennial Lodge who provided Greta with services over the last eight years, and a particular thanks to Wendy, Elaine and all the staff on the second floor who assisted with her comfort care. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society of Manitoba, Unit 10 - 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, R3C 4G2 or the Golden West Centennial Lodge Auxiliary, 811 School Rd., Winnipeg, R2Y 0S8. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
