DR. MAURICE JACK DEKOVEN On Tuesday, August 3, 1999 at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, at the age of 89. Beloved husband for 62 years of Marion (Stillman), loving father of Maxwell (Carol Zyk), Howard, Harriet (Charles Bigenwald), Joel (Elan Fridfinnson), dear grandfather of eight, great-grandfather of four, and uncle of many nieces and nephews. Also survived by his sister Sylvia Segal, and sisters-in-law, Lil Koven and Audrey DeKoven. Predeceased by his sisters Dora and Sadie, and brothers Sam and Percy. Having graduated from the University of Manitoba Medical School in 1933, he practiced medicine for 56 years, including family practices in Whitemouth, Man., Sydney, N.S. and Winnipeg, Man. At the same time, he had a long and distinguished career in Public Health with the Federal Government. In Sydney, during the Second World War he provided medical care to the Merchant Marine convoys, and later became Medical Director of the Marine Hospital. Returning to Winnipeg in 1960, he continued his career in Public Health (including a close professional relationship with the then Manitoba Indian Brotherhood) combined with Family Practice, retiring from practice in 1989. He was known for his straightforward honesty and his devotion to his family and profession; his wise counsel and wry sense of humour will be missed by all. Funeral service and burial will take place on Friday, August 6, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. graveside at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery in Winnipeg. Family and friends will gather at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue following the funeral. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice.
