HARRY CHAN Peacefully on Friday, February 9, 2001 at the Tuxedo Villa Extendicare, Harry Chan passed away at the age of 106 years. Harry was born July 19, 1895 in Canton, China, and immigrated to Canada with is father in 1909. He spent his teen years working various jobs before returning to China to marry and to have a family: son Barry; and daughter Kum Ho. In 1923, Harry returned to Canada and established Chans Cafe in 1938. Throughout his life Harry was known as a hard working restauranteur and dedicated husband and family man. He was also a generous and devoted member of a variety of cultural and humanitarian organizations, especially the Chinese Benevolent Society. Upon his retirement in 1976 at the age of 81 years, Harry kept busy with gardening, baking and his love for horse racing. Harry was predeceased by his first wife Ming Yee in 1971 and daughter Kum Ho in 1995, both in China. Harry is survived and will be surely missed by his loving wife Mary of 54 years; son Barry and wife Joyce, of Winnipeg; his nine grandchildren, Gail and husband Roland, Alan and wife Carmela, Lorraine and husband Rick; grandsons, Melvin and Vincent, of Canada, and Geung Hone, Ging Hong, Feung Ging, and Feung Ling of China; his great-grandchildren, Anson, Jason, Adrienne, Derek, and Jordan, of Canada. Viewing will be held between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 15, Kerrs Funeral Chapel, 120 Adelaide St. Funeral service will also be held at the chapel, 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 16, with Pastor Wing Mak officiating. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Mary Skye and Anne Korotash for the selfless love and devoted care of Harry throughout the years. Also a special thanks to the staff at Tuxedo Villa. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Harry may be made to a charity of ones choice.
