DONALD HECTOR McMURACHY Donald Hector McMurachy passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 10, 2001 at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg at the age of 82 years. He was the son of Daniel Stephen and Mary Elizabeth McMurachy. Dad was born on the family farm north of McConnell, MB in the northwest corner of Blanshard municipality, and attended Holylea School. When the Second World War broke out, Dad was an enthusiastic volunteer and was quickly sent overseas. He joined the unique Canadian Artillery Regiment, the Second Canadian Heavy Anti-Aircraft, rising to the rank of Sergeant. This regiment saw duty first as part of Britains air defenses, and from D-Day onwards, as a field artillery unit in France, Holland and Germany. Dad was very proud of his army years and the friendships developed during those times remained constant and important to him all his life. After the war, Dad returned to the family farm. He married Nora Cassells of Shoal Lake. Dads pleasures were simple. He enjoyed gardening, and loved his flowers. Watching birds and other local wildlife was his entertainment. During his later years, as his eyesight worsened and his health declined, his dogs became an inseparable part of him, developing into an uncanny awareness that helped him to retain the independence that he treasured most. As late as this past summer, he could be seen out on his tractor working in the field. Mourning Dads passing is daughter Valerie (Robert) Verhaeghe, sons, Guy (Shirley) McMurachy, and Byron (Sheri) McMurachy and daughter Jennifer. As well, grandchildren, Christopher and Kirsten Bohonis, and Alastair and Stuart McMurachy. He also leaves behind his sister Jean (Don) Pollock. Dad was predeceased by his parents; brothers and sisters, and by son-in-law Dwight Bohonis in 1982. Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 15 at the Strathclair United Church with interment to follow at the Strathclair Municipal Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Salvation Army. Raes Funeral Service, Shoal Lake, was in charge of the arrangements.
