JULIA ARKOS June 16, 1933 - February 12, 2001 It is with heavy hearts that the family of Julia Arkos announces her passing at the Health Sciences Centre after a brief illness. Julia will be deeply missed by her beloved husband of 49 years, Julius; and her three children of whom she was so proud: Julius Jr. (Helen), Greg (Gail) and Julia Jr. (Matt). Julia was born in Szarvas, Hungary. Growing up, she wanted to be a pilot or a biochemist but instead was awarded a scholarship to study classical ballet at the Vaganova School in Leningrad. She had a distinguished career as Artistic Director and Prima Ballerina for the Szeged National Theatre and Opera Company, and danced in Budapest and throughout Russia. After coming to Canada, she joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, where she taught in the Professional Division for almost 20 years. She was known to her students as a strict but loving task master. She actively demonstrated dance technique until her retirement at age 64 when she required hip replacement surgery. Her relationships with her students were very meaningful to her and she took great joy from her teaching. Julia enjoyed her walks in St. Vital Park with Rose, beating Dad at gin rummy every morning and crossword puzzles. She loved mystery novels and science fiction. Always willing to embrace the new, she recently embarked on Harry Potter. She left behind her bookmark in Book 4, Chapter 24. Julia will be remembered for her spontaneous choreographies in the living room, her willingness to make herself silly to make others smile, and her lifelong love of animals. She gave of herself generously and asked very little in return. She loved giving and receiving big bear hugs. Cremation has already taken place according to her wishes. Flowers are gratefully declined. Julia valued the arts and if you wish to honour her memory, a donation may be made to the arts group of your choice. The family wishes to express our gratitude to the excellent team on GH4 at the Health Sciences Centre who made this past week so much easier to bear. A service celebrating Julias life will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, February 17, at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet building, 380 Graham Ave. "Fair, kind, and true, have often livd alone, Which three till now never kept seat in one."
