Bill was born at home on a farm at Bowsman, Man., on April 4, 1934. He spent some happy years there with his family before they all moved to Winnipeg when he was 12. He continued his schooling there and worked as a paperboy and later, for Winnipeg Supply. At the age of 16 he went north to visit his sister Kay and her husband and ended up getting a job on the Hudson Bay Railway. Over the next few years he worked as a coal dock operator and pumpman. As relieving pumpman he worked in most of the communities on the Bay Line, but worked full time at Gillam and then at Pikwitonei. While at Pikwitonei, he married Mona Jaeger in 1957. The had one son, Patrick, while still on the Bay Line. In 1960 they moved to The Pas to try their hand at farming. There, a second son, Michael, was born. In 1965 they sold their farm and moved to Wabowden. Bill worked for Manitoba Hydro for one year. He then worked as a night watchman and janitor for Frontier School Division with a few years off when he worked as a guard at the jail. In 1994 he retired to fulfil a longtime dream of buying a place in the country and puttering around with his hobbies. They bought land near Marchand and settled down to enjoy retirement. Bill was an avid collector of many things and enjoyed photography, watching and feeding birds, carpentry, reading and numerous other activities. In his younger days he enjoyed hunting and fishing but as he grew older he preferred to do his hunting with a camera. Bill was a shy, quiet person but really enjoyed socializing with close friends. He loved his family and his dogs and was especially fond of children. He was a loving husband, a wonderful father and a loyal friend. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. He leaves to mourn him his wife Mona; sons, Patrick (Nancy) and Michael; a sister Katherine Harpe (Albert) grandchildren, Victoria, Craig, Steven, Brent and Brad and many nieces and nephews. His father Robert, his mother Ivy Walton, stepfather Joe Walton and his brother John predeceased him. Viewing took place at Loewen Funeral Chapel at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 17. Bill wanted to be cremated and asked that there be no funeral service. Arrangements entrusted to Loewen Funeral Chapel of Steinbach. 326-1351.
