DOROTHY MORTON JOHNSON 1913 - 2001 On Thursday, February 22, 2001, Dorothy Morton Johnson passed away in her 88th year in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Dr. Kjartan I. Johnson in September, 1992. Dorothy was born on the farm of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Morton, near Gladstone, Manitoba. Her early education was at Livingstone School No. 22, a one-room country school, offering Grades 1 to 8. Her high school education was received in Gladstone. Being the late 20s and early 30s, she felt fortunate to have attended St. Johns College in Winnipeg for two years. Her desire to become a nurse intervened at this time, and in 1933 she entered the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating with an R.N. degree in 1936. Upon graduation, she joined the staff of Winnipeg General Hospital becoming the Supervisor in "F" Flat which was the Mens Medical Public at that time. At this stage of her life she met an intern, "K.I." Johnson and they were married in 1939. She and Kjartie lived in Gimli, Manitoba from 1939 to 1950, and in Pine Falls, Manitoba from 1950 to 1964. From 1964 until 1990, they lived on their farm near Gladstone, Manitoba until their move to Winnipeg in 1990. Dorothy was known for her loving kindness, thoughtfulness, humility, graciousness and quiet wisdom and will be greatly missed by her children, daughter Margaret and Brian Noonan of Nanoose Bay, B.C.; daughter Linda and Jamie McEwen of Winnipeg; and son Bill and Margaret Johnson of Edmonton, Alberta. "Grammy" and "Great-Grammy" is very greatly loved by her nine grandchildren, Linda Henderson (Dean), Jo-Anne Noonan (Gordon Green), Kathy Noonan (Marc Cameron), Shelagh Noonan (Norman Hoessmann), Grant McEwen, Sandy McEwen, Jason Johnson, Kristjan Johnson, Trisha Johnson, and her 14 great-grandchildren, Neil, Andrew, Connell, Jane, Avery, Brock, Leah, Sean, Matthew, Paula, Maude, Eli, Bridge and Dominic. She is also survived by her brother Harry Morton and sister-in-law Peggy of Blenheim, New Zealand; sister Nora Phillips and brother-in-law Bud of Winnipeg; her sister-in-law Peg Morton of Winnipeg, and sister-in-law Betty Morton of Guelph, Ontario. She will also be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Her parents, brothers W.L. Morton and Frank L. Morton, and sister Margaret Morton Fahrni predeceased her. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Health Sciences Centre Foundation, 800 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 9Z9. In keeping with Dorothys wishes, a private memorial service will be held in Gladstone, Manitoba. She will be interred in the Gladstone Cemetery beside her husband Kjartie and her parents.
