Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHUGH HARRISON GUNN It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our adored husband, father, grandfather and dear friend, on Saturday, February 24, 2001. Hugh is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean (nee Stunden) and daughters Arlie Phillips (Glen) of Vancouver and Heather Turk (Ted) of Winnipeg. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Evan, Jamie, Kathleen and Leah; his sister-in-law Thora Smaller of Toronto and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Maling in 1984. Hugh was born in Winnipeg, April 24, 1916. He graduated from Gordon Bell High School in 1934 and attended the University of Manitoba. With the outbreak of the war, he was involved in the RCAF training command, Winnipeg as Flying Officer Adjutant, and later as commanding officer of an air cadet training squadron until 1946. He was employed by the Canadian Fruit Distributors (B.C. Tree Fruits) for 41 years, until his retirement in 1981 as district manager. He met Jean through the St. Andrews Church "Young Peoples Club" and they were married in 1942. Hugh had many hobbies and interests. He loved music and was an excellent pianist and organist. He composed music, "The Mistletoe Polka" and "The Gang That You Knew" that were published and featured on CBC Radio. Hugh belonged to several bridge clubs and was an accomplished player. He was also a gifted woodworker, poet, and humourist. Spurred by a keen and inquiring mind, Hugh was an avid reader with interests in history, astronomy, mathematics and physics. Einstein and Churchill were fitting heroes. Hugh was a strong supporter of John Black United Church since 1950 and served on the church board for many years. In 1957, he joined the Kiwanis Club of East Kildonan and has been a continuous member for 44 years. He served as President in 1966 and was on the Board of Directors for the Kiwanis homes of East Kildonan for 11 years. Hugh had a passion for golf and curling and was a member of the Rossmere Golf and Country Club. Hugh was involved and served on the Concordia Hospital Foundation Board. Hugh was a strong believer and supporter of his family, his friends and in his community. He is much loved and dearly missed. DEO OPTIMO MAXIMO (To God Be The Greatest Glory - In Giving) A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 2 at 10:00 a.m. at John Black Memorial United Church, Henderson at Roberta Avenue. In lieu of flowers, if friends wish, donations may be made in his memory to the Concordia Hospital Foundation Board, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
