DR. DONALD NEIL CAMPBELL McINTYRE, MD. On Thursday, February 22, 2001, Dr. Donald N.C. McIntyre passed away quietly with dignity and courage. Born June 25, 1914, he was educated at Ridley College, St. Catharines, ON, and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba. He undertook four years of post graduate study including time spent at Toronto General Hospital. Dr. McIntyre served five years with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War and, on his return, as Wing Commander in the Reserve Air Force he organized the Reserves Medical Unit. Having qualified in Aviation and Industrial Medicine, Dr. McIntyre continued to serve as medical examiner for Transport Canada and for the Department of Immigration. Except for his wartime service he pursued his entire professional career in Winnipeg, joining with his father in the practice of general medicine. Dr. Donald McIntyre Senior had re-entered private practice in Winnipeg in 1919 after overseas service in the First World War. A true physician, mentor, and loyal friend, Dr. Donald N.C. McIntyre cared for his many patients with skill, dedication, and compassion, while at the same time serving on the attending staff of five local general hospitals. However, it was his lengthy association with the Sisters of the Misericorde and the Misericordia General Hospital which Dr. McIntyre most cherished. He was appointed Chief of Staff of the Misericordia and a member of the Board of Directors. Fund raising efforts of the two Drs. McIntyre resulted in the one-million-dollar donation, from the Shea family to the Sisters of the Misericorde which was used in part to construct the Cornish Wing of the hospital. Dr. McIntyre played an active and distinguished role in the affairs of organized medicine. He was Executive Member and later President of the Manitoba Medical Association, a Member of the Economics Committee of the Canadian Medical Association, a Founding Member and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Manitoba Medical Services (the doctor-sponsored plan) where his outstanding administrative abilities led to his election as President of the Western Conference of Pre-paid Medical Plans (Canada and U.S.A.), and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Medical Services (later the MHSC). During this time he served as Special Adviser to the Minister of Health in the implementation of the Federal Medicare Plan. In recognition of this monumental task, Dr. McIntyre was the recipient of a Citation from the Premier and Government of Manitoba "for his faithful and diligent services to the people of Manitoba." He was further honoured for his achievements in medicine by the unanimous vote of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Medical Association. The citation reads: "Dr. Donald Neil Campbell McIntyre, as a member in good standing in the Association, is elected to Senior Membership." A Life Member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, Dr. McIntyre was honoured in 1992 as a 35-year Founding Member in recognition of his lifelong commitment to family medicine. Dr. McIntyre had a profound knowledge of the history of his beloved Manitoba. He came from a distinguished pioneer family. He was honoured to have been named a Founder of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, a distinction that had also been bestowed upon his grandfather, Dr. Daniel McIntyre, OBE, MA, LLB (Dalhousie) who was Chancellor of the University of Manitoba and superintendent of Winnipeg Schools. Daniel McIntyres memory is honoured in the collegiate institute that bears his name. Dr. McIntyres maternal grandfather, Daniel Reid, came west to Winnipeg with the Wolseley expedition in 1870 and was granted the first fishing rights on Lake Winnipeg. Dr. McIntyres business and community interests were many and varied. A skilled equestrian and avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed vacations spent with his family at their summer camp on Lake of the Woods, and the many hunting and fishing trips to Northern Manitoba with his colleagues. Dr. McIntyre was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Donald Faison McIntyre, LLD (Hon), MD, and Ethyl McIntyre, OBE, RN. He is survived by his adored wife Margaret. He also leaves to mourn three sisters, Mary Elizabeth Malmaeus, Stockholm, Winnifred Ruth Davies, Toronto, and Marjory Lynn Rich, Denver. A private service with interment was held at St. Johns Cathedral, Winnipeg.
