STANLEY SILVERBERG Peacefully on Sunday, March 4, 2001 with his family by his side at the Victoria General Hospital, Stanley passed away at the age of 91. He was born December 16, 1909 in Ozarow Poland, the youngest of ten children. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, some of whom perished during the Holocaust. Stanley immigrated to Toronto in 1929 and lived with family until he married his beloved Ruth in 1942. He began his working career in the garment trade which led to his move to Winnipeg in 1949. He began Mid West Quilting with his brother-in-law and in 1950 another brother-in-law joined him in the business and their partnership continued until 1967 when Stanley began Major Quilting Ltd. He continued working and participating in the business until his death. He was well respected by his peers and the business community and was known as an honest, hard working man whose word was his bond. Sports played a large part in Stanleys life. He was an active bowler until he discovered the game of golf. He spent many long winters practicing and perfecting the proper grip. "Did you see THAT?" were his famous words on the links as he sank the first of two, holes in one. He also spent many hours cheering his favorite baseball team, the Blue Jays, and relished in their World Series triumphs. Stanley was a founding member of the Herzlia Adas Yeshurun Synagogue and joined the Beth Israel Synagogue in 1998. He conducted himself with steadfast belief in Yiddishkeit and maintained his strong Jewish roots throughout his life. His wife Ruth passed away in March 1989 and that was a tremendous loss for him, after having been married for 47 years. Ultimately he moved from his house on Elm Street into the Waverley complex where he spent his last year. The family expresses our heartfelt thanks to Stanleys companion of more than seven years, Sherlina Major, for her tremendous help and valuable care. We also want to express our gratitude to the 3rd floor nursing staff at the Victoria General Hospital for their kindness and compassion during Stanleys final days. Our sincere thanks to Dr. A. Thottingal for his care during the past two years. Stanley is survived by his son Joey, daughter-in-law Diane, granddaughters, Alyssia, Amanda and Alaina. He will be sorely missed by his faithful dinner companion Pez. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews in Canada, United States, Israel, France and South America. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 6 at the Chesed Shel Emes with interment at the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery. Rabbi A. Altein conducted the service. Pallbearers were Stephen Benjamin, Victor Benjamin, Richard Shan, Robert Shan, Richard Shaw and Barry Steinfeld. Goodbye, for now, Zaida. You will remain in our hearts forever.
