Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN PETER BERGEN November 9, 1940 - March 5, 2001 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son-in-law, husband, brother, stepfather and grandfather John Peter Bergen. John peacefully fell asleep at the Vita Hospital with his loved ones by his side. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Karen; daughter and son-in-law Kim and Scott Friesen and their son Jordan. He was a loving grandparent to Jordan, and he would have enjoyed seeing him grow older. He will also be missed by his mother and father-in-law Irene and Earl Grier; his sister Marge (John Janzen and their families) his sisters-in-law, Eleanore and Tina and their families, Sandra (Brian Smith and their family), Delores McLennan and her family. John was predeceased by his parents Henry and Margaret Bergen; two brothers, Henry and Harry. John grew up in Arnaud, receiving some of his education at the Timlick school. Throughout his life John was a kind and generous person. The flowers and gifts he gave generously to his wife will always be a memory to her. He was a faithful babysitter to his friends children whom he adored. They faithfully remembered each others special days with phone calls or cards. They kept in touch and came and visited him the day before he died. He was a caring man, escorting his aunts and uncles on many trips west. He loved people and enjoyed visiting and regretted in the last years that this became impossible due to his disability. When Karen met John he was the Andres winery manager at Morris. They were married June 11, 1988, in Morris United Church. With Karen, he operated the Maple Leaf Restaurant in Emerson for six years. Johns health began to fail and they moved to the farm at Tolstoi where Karen began work at the Vita Health District Centre. His simple pleasure was attending flea markets and collecting Chalet blown glass, crystal, Beswick horses, Blue Mountain pottery and cuckoo clocks. He enjoyed get-togethers with family and friends and prepared many a delicious meal for them. John loved to travel and spent many weekends at his friends, and when he no longer could go visiting he was thankful for the many kind people who would stop in at his home, would call him on the telephone or write letters. A service in Johns memory will be held Saturday, March 10 at the Roseau River Bible Camp at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Leslie Calder officiating. Interment at the Greenridge United Church Cemetery at a later date. The family would like to thank Dr. Azar and staff of the Vita Hospital and to his home support workers for the care he was given. In lieu of flowers, donations in Johns memory can be made to either the Greenridge United Church Memorial Fund or Stuartburn Gospel Church. Arrangements entrusted to Loewen Funeral Chapel of Steinbach. (204) 326-1351.
