SIDNEY CHARLTON It is with much sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear father and friend on Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at the Deer Lodge Centre. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret Beatrice in 1980. He leaves to mourn his daughters, Pauline Riley and Margo Charlton; grandsons, Martin Riley and Stephen Riley; brothers, Harry, Jack, Frank; sisters, Francis, Mary and special friend Ken Apostle. Sidney was born in Yorkshire, England in 1920 and came to Canada in 1965. He had a gentle, loving spirit and a ready smile. Sidney was a resident of the Deer Lodge Centre for the past 12 years where he will be remembered for his adventurous outings in his colourfully decorated wheelchair. Sometimes he was an intrepid wanderer and covered over 15 miles a day in all kinds of weather, sometimes he went only as far as the duck pond in Assiniboine Park. Sidney took up clock making in his later years and despite crippling arthritis, made many beautiful timepieces for his family, friends and residents of the centre. He was born in a rural community and spent much of his life working the land in England and in Canada. Sidney loved the prairies and one of his favourite activities was to go for long car rideson these occasions he would share his knowledge of crops, animals, weather, and his philosophy of life. During the Second World War he served in the British Home Guard, and he was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. A memorial service for Sidney will be held in the chapel of the Deer Lodge Centre, 2109 Portage Ave., on Friday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m. Our family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Deer Lodge Centre for their attentive care. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sidneys memory may be made to the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities, 825 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, Man., R3A 1M5.
