STEPHEN ROY McCARTHY August 21, 1923 - March 6, 2001 On Tuesday, March 6, 2001, surrounded by his family, Stephen McCarthy, beloved husband of Lillian passed away at the Concordia Hospital at the age of 77. Left to cherish his memory are Lillian, his wife of 52 years; daughters, Pat (Bill Briggs) and Lynne (Claude Davis) grandchildren, Geoffrey and Andrea, and brothers, John, Joe and Brian and their families in British Columbia. Steve was born in England and moved with his family to Canada at the age of four. While growing up, he lived in a number of Western Canadian cities including Medicine Hat, Vancouver and Nanaimo. He trained as a navigator in the Air Force during the Second World War, and liked to joke that the enemy surrendered as soon as they heard he was about to be sent overseas. Steve and Lil met in Yorkton, SK, and were married there in 1949. They moved to Winnipeg with their young family in 1956 when he was transferred with Fry-Cadbury. He enjoyed a long career in sales management with Cadbury Schweppes Powell, retiring early in 1983. He then began a second career as executive director of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, retiring again in 1990. He was a founding member of the Kinsmen Rehfit Centre, and over the years devoted many volunteer hours to the ACT, Manitoba Track & Field Association, Ministers Council on Sport and Fitness, and the Rehfit Centre. His greatest pleasure was his wife and family - he was often the only Dad in the crowd at school concerts, Brownie fly-ups, anything his girls were involved in. More recently, he discovered the joy of being a grandparent, a role he undertook with great enthusiasm. He was an active member of Rossmere Golf & Country Club, and enjoyed many years of good golf and bad jokes with Ted, Bob and "Doc". We would like to thank the I.C.U. staff at Concordia Hospital for their compassionate care of Steve and his family in his final hours, especially Dr. Greg Eschun, nurse Cheryl Orr, and Chaplain Rosalie Loeppky. A mass to celebrate Steves life will be held at St. Ignatius Church, S.W. corner of Corydon and Stafford, on Tuesday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m. In keeping with Dads wishes, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Steves memory to the Concordia Hospital Foundation. Klassen Funeral Chapel, 338-0331.
