MICHAEL MATWICHYNA Peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, March 10, 2001 at Seven Oaks Hospital, Michael Matwichyna was called Home by our Heavenly Father to be with Him. Mike was born in Winnipeg on June 30, 1932. He attended Norquay School and St. Pauls College. He worked with his family in Grocery-Meats for 20 years and Canada Safeway till his retirement. He was a member of Blessed Virgin Mary Church, serving on the church council, member of the Mens Club, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus St. Josaphat #4138 and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Canon Luhovy Assembly. He was also one of the founders of Winnipeg Hawkeyes Football Club. Besides his beloved wife Violet, he leaves to cherish his memory one son Michael of Honolulu, Hawaii; two daughters, Joan Glennie (Ron) of Winnipeg, Lisa Lem (Darryl) of Edmonton; grandchildren, Craig and Bryan Glennie, Christopher and Justin Lem; sister Julie Ozunko (Roy) sister-in-law Vera Matwichyna; mother-in-law Lillian Benke of Yorkton; wonderful and understanding brothers-in-law, Blair Anfield (Rose) of Mornville, Alta., Neal Benke (Arlene) of Kelowna, B.C., Dennis Benke (Birgitta) of Edmonton, Alta., and their families. Numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Anastasia and brother Bill. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 14 at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 965 Boyd Ave., with Mitrat G. Oucharyk officiating. Funeral service will terminate at the church. Private family interment. Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Eschuk, Ed Lechman, John Kuzina. Active pallbearers will be George Grabowski, John Debroni, Ed Semchyshyn, Roy Ozunko, Rudy Kulbaba, Joe Gregg. Special thanks to Dr. D. Tsang, nurses and staff of Palliative Care, Seven Oaks Hospital for their compassion and care.
