DONALD F. HUTCHEON 1916 - 2001 With broken hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Donald Hutcheon on March 9 at the age of 84 years, at the Riverview Health Centre. Don will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by Pat, his devoted wife of 61 years; his daughters, June (Bud) Renton and Donna (Ken-deceased) Gorman of Fort McMurray, Alta; his grandchildren, Laurie (Ken) Nemez, Greg Renton, Linda Renton, and Ken (Dana) Renton, Donald (Connie) Gorman, David, Jodi and Mandy Gorman; his great-grandchildren, Kyle, Breanne, Daniel, Megan, Adrian, Raven and Destiny; his sisters, Agnes (Ted), Margaret, May (John), and Mary and his sisters-in-law, Lillian (Peter) and Joan and her son Robert. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Mary; his brother Alex and sister Vi. Don was born on September 10, 1916 in Thunder Bay, Ont. The family later moved to the St. James area where he attended school. On completing school, he was employed as a woodworker at Parkhill Bedding. In 1938, Don met Patricia Proctor, and they were married on May 20, 1939, at Sparling United Church. Shortly after the birth of their second daughter, Don enlisted with the R.C.N.V.R. and was soon posted to Halifax, N.S. on the H.M.C.S. Protector. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946, and upon returning home he was accepted by the Winnipeg Police Department, where he began his lifetime career in law enforcement. He started out as a Constable, "walking the Beat" in Winnipegs North End, and a few years later was made Detective. After 29 years, Don retired from the force, but wanting to continue his involvement in law enforcement, he joined the Provincial Sherrifs Department, where he was a Sherrifs Officer for 10 years. Following his retirement he spent many happy hours at the Fort Garry Legion Branch #90 with his comrades and friends. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, March 14 at 1:00 p.m., in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley St., with Legion Service and Colour Party in attendance. The family would like to thank Dr. Heidenreich and the staff on the fifth floor at Victoria Hospital, with a very special thank you to Dr. Taraska and I.C.U. unit. Although Don only spent 1 week at Riverview, the loving care he received from Diane Cook, Dr. Marr and staff was deeply appreciated. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation, 1 Morley Ave., Wpg., MB, R3L 2P4. We will all miss those "Sinatra blue eyes", the crooked smile and the many tales he had to tell of his Navy and law enforcement days. We will always love and remember him.
