GORDON ALAN YOUNG October 4, 1956 - March 13, 2001 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Gordon Young after a long and difficult battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Gord is survived by his grandmother Irene; his parents, Alan and Catherine; brothers and sisters, Laurie, Cathy, Kel and Bill and their families. He is also survived by numerous relatives and friends with whom, unfortunately, contact has been lost. He was predeceased by his mother in 1991. He enjoyed all sports, particularly hockey and was an avid fisherman both before and during the early stages of his illness. Gord was a prizewinner at the Handicapped Fishing Derby in 1984. In 1988 he travelled to Windsor, ON, where he won a Gold Medal in swimming at the Games for the Disabled. Gord loved children and entertained for many years as "Rooky" the Clown. He was a volunteer with the Pre School Program at the Society of Manitobans with Disabilities (S.M.D.), known to the children as a source of Smarties and free rides in his power chair. In 1994, S.M.D. named their boardroom "The Gord Room" in his honour. They also established the Gord Young Staff Achievement Award and named Gord as their Volunteer of the Year in 1982. He had a unique sense of humour. Gord laughed at people and situations but mostly he laughed at his own personal problems and at himself. Humour was his friend and his way of coping. Gord had spent the last five years on 5E at the Deer Lodge Centre where the level of care was exceptional. In keeping with Gords wishes, there will not be a formal service but a private interment will take place at a later date. A gathering of family and friends with a reception will be held in the Auditorium in Deer Lodge Centre, 2109 Portage Ave., on Monday, March 19 at 2:00 p.m. "Gord" stories will be welcome. If friends so desire, donations in Gords memory may be made to a childrens charity of your choice. WOJCIKS FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM 897 - 4665
