WALTER HENRY BROWN Walter was born Monday, March 16, 1931 at North Battleford, Sask. He worked as a farm helper, cat operator, and truck driver before joining the army in the Tank Corps at Calgary, Alta., in 1948. While stationed briefly in Ontario, he met and married Betty Lee, Saturday, October 1, 1949 in Meaford, Ont. In 1952, they made their permanent home in The Pas. Walter hired on with CNR in 1952 and worked on construction of the rail line to Lynn Lake, as a fireman on steam engines, and later became a Locomotive Engineer. He transferred to VIA Rail in the mid 80s and retired in September 1990 after 38 years of railroad service. He married Jackie Needham, Saturday, August 16, 1997 at Clearwater Lake. Walter was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for many years. Walter passed away suddenly at his home on Clearwater Lake near The Pas, Man., Saturday, March 3, 2001 at the age of 69 years. He leaves to mourn his daughter, Wendy Streit and husband Gody of The Pas; son John (Karen) of Valemount, B.C.; son Robert (Yen) of Saskatoon, Sask.; sister Cheryl Gagnon of Brandon, Man.; grandson Darby Brown (Serene) of Toronto, Ont.; granddaughter Marni Streit (Corey) of Yorkton, Sask.; grandson Ken Streit (Natalie) of Calgary, Alta.; granddaughters, Melanie and Melissa of Valemount, B.C. and wife Jackie. Walter was predeceased by his wife Betty in 1993; mother Ethyle in 1962; father Henry in 1967; stepfather John in 1984. The funeral service was held Thursday, March 8, 2001, 11:00 a.m., at the Chapel of Hemauer Funeral Home with Ven. Grahme Spear of Christ Church Anglican, presiding. If friends so desire, donations in Walters memory may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund, Box 478, The Pas, MB R9A 1K6 or to The Pas Health Complex Foundation Memorial Fund, Box 240, The Pas, MB R9A 1K4. Honorary Pallbearers were Bob Hayes, Ron Hayes, John Ohryn, Gil Verville, Eloi Libbrecht and Dennis Libbrecht. Legion Tribute was given by Comrade Ove Larsen. Legion Honor Guard were Peter Wilson, Doug Goldstrand Sr., Hubert Libbrecht, Pat Gates, Joe Cloutier and David Grant. Hemauer Funeral Home, The Pas, in care of arrangements. 623-3261.
