ELLEN BERNADINE WYATT (nee FLINT) Ellen passed away on March 15, 2001, after a brief illness. She will be greatly missed by son John P. Wyatt of Prince George, B.C.; daughter Marie L. Stratton and son-in-law Terry of Winnipeg; sisters, Robin Veir (Martin) and Bunny Taggart of California; sister Rhona Dexter and sister-in-law Isabel Craddock of England; grandchildren, Mark (Beverley), Shannon (Neil), Geoffrey (Monique), Grahame and Meaghan; along with great-grandchildren Nikolas, Samantha, Fergus and Claire. Ellen led a most remarkable life. Born in Rangoon, Burma to British Colonial parents, Ellen, as a young woman, studied nursing and midwifery at St. Pauls, London, England. After returning home, she later walked out of Burma during the Second World War, caring for the weak and ill throughout the journey. Ellen emigrated from India to England as a single mother with two children, and there studied public health. She came to Canada in 1953, and her two children joined her two years later. Ellen first worked in Canada for the Saskatchewan Government at Lake Athabaska as the lone outpost nurse for Stony Rapids. She then went to work as a public health nurse in Radville, Sask., where she made many lifelong friends. Later, after transferring to the Federal Government, she worked as the only nurse in many northern communities from Sandy Lake, Sask., to Bloodvein, Man. Upon retirement she moved to Calgary where she remained until a combination of the Malaria she contracted during the flight from Burma and Parkinsons Disease caused her to relocate to Winnipeg to be closer to her daughter. Ellen was a strong willed woman determined to make her own way in life while raising two children on her own under trying circumstances. No one who encountered her will ever forget her strength of character. She will be fondly remembered for her "kamikaze" like driving, her wonderful dinners and her love of animals. The family wishes to thank the entire staff at the St. Norbert Nursing Home for their loving care since 1996, and to give a special thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Atish Munier for their friendship over the years. "God Bless" The family will hold a private celebration of Ellens life.
