Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBERT MOONAY It is with deep sadness that the family of Bert Moonay announces his passing, on March 18, 2001. Born in Russia on December 15, 1899, to Golda and Sholom Schlechovsky, Bert was the third of nine children. At the age of 20, Bert led his younger brothers and sisters in escaping from Russia, uplifted their spirits during internment in Ireland on their way to Canada. Bert laid railroad tracks in Kenora, Ont., farmed, traded furs and operated general stores in Hubbard, Hamiota, and Fosston, Sask. In 1929 he married Betty Weinstein, who predeceased him in 1985 after a marriage of 55 years. They moved to Winnipeg in 1942 where Bert owned various businesses before settling into a successful career as a hotel owner, first in Selkirk and then in Winnipeg. During his career Bert befriended and helped people from all backgrounds and ethnicities. Bert Moonay is mourned by his daughters and their husbands, Lona and Allan Shafer and Deanna and Saul Silverman; his grandchildren, Maureen and David Kling, Lesli Shafer and Don Selver, Ruth Silverman and Douglas Knight, Eli Silverman and Debbie Phillips; his great-grandchildren, Rakel Kling, Jordan Kling, Dana Tessler, Alix Tessler, Max Selver and Avril Silverman as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Israel Mooney, Sonia Bookhalter, Rifka Zuckert, Libba Silverman, Joseph L. Moonay, Clara Portigal, Jonah Moonay and Issac Schlechovsky. His funeral was held on March 20 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue followed by interment at Shaarey Zedek Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Gerald Gunn, Mark Schulman Q.C., the Honourable Mr. Justice Perry Schulman, Gerald Rosenby, Marvin Rothstein, Zane Tessler and Bill Narvey. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Mr. Moonays physician, Dr. Frederick J. Ross, and to his home caregivers, Verlina (Joyce) Beckford, Beverly Cameron, Mary Anne (Tobey) Little and Alina Menzel. The family would appreciate donations in Berts memory be made to the Adult Leisure Program at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, 561 Wellington Cres., R3M 0A6, or phone 452-3711. Shiva is being observed at 19 Ayr Blvd.
