MICHAEL BEDNARCZYK Peacefully, after a long illness, on March 20, 2001, at St. Josephs Residence, Michael Bednarczyk, beloved husband of Stephanie, passed away at the age of 86 years. Besides his wife, Michael is survived by one son George, his wife Sharyn, and his two grandsons, Joey and Adam. His passing is also mourned in the Ukraine by his brother George, sister Helena and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Anna; one brother Nikolas; and one sister Antonina. Michael was born on April 27, 1914 in Bolotowce, Poland, where he farmed with his family before joining the Polish Army prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. Michael was held captive before escaping to join the newly formed Polish Army in 1941, serving with the cavalry and artillery divisions. He participated with distinction in the famous battles of Monte Cassino, Ancona and Bologna and was decorated with many Polish and British recognitions of valour. After the War, Michael was discharged to England where he met his wife Stephanie. After the birth of their son George, the family immigrated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg in 1951. After working as a labourer, Michael and Stephanie established "Mikes Fine Foods" in the heart of the North End where he served his neighbourhood for six years. Michael subsequently began a long and distinguished career in real estate, working with Atlas Realty and Royal Trust over a period of 35 years. Michael was a longtime member of the St. John Cantius Fraternal Aid Society, acting as President for two terms. He was a member of the Polish Combatants Association, Branch 13 and of the Royal Canadian Legion. Michael and Stephanie were members of St. John Cantius Parish since the early 50s and singing in the choir was one of Michaels greatest joys. Michaels generous, outgoing personality touched many over the years. His love of hunting, fishing, gardening, travel, music, dance and the outdoors was surpassed only by the deepest affection and pride he experienced in his many godchildren and especially his grandchildren. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Michaels "other family", the staff and volunteers of the St. Josephs Residence. Your warmth, kindness, patience and never-ending caring for Michael will forever be remembered. Prayers will be held on Sunday, March 25 at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 26 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Cantius Church, 846 Burrows Ave., Fr. Henry Uczniak and Fr. Henryk Laciak presiding. Interment will follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery. "In the arms of the angels" CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL in care of arrangements, 586-8044.
