CHRISTIAN (CHRIS) SCHUBERT 1905 - 2001 On Wednesday, March 21, 2001 our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away after a long and full life of 95 years. He will be sadly missed by Irene, his loving wife and friend of 62 years; his children, Lottie (Conrad) Harris, Chris (Gloria), Judy (Dave) Giesbrecht, Janet, John (Bev), and Helen; his grandchildren (11), and great-grandchildren (3). Dad was born May 5, 1905 in Herning, Denmark and came to Canada in 1921. As a young man, Dad worked on a number of farms in Saskatchewan including his future father-in-laws. He also worked in logging camps in Sioux Lookout, Ont. Dad and Mom came to Winnipeg in October of 1939 to be caretakers of an apartment block. In 1942 he became involved in the labour movement by organizing the caretakers from several apartment blocks. In 1946 this local group affiliated with the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union and Dad became their first international representative. By 1958 he was elected as the International Vice President of the RWDSU, a position that he held until his retirement in 1970. From 1969-1979 Dad was Chairman of the Civil Service Commission and in 1985 he was awarded the Order of the Buffalo Hunt by the Province of Manitoba in recognition of his long service to others. His many years of dedication to helping the working people was also recognized by having a room in the Union Centre dedicated to him. Dad was always active and volunteered his time in many organizations. He served as a board member for the United Church, the Winnipeg Presbytery Council, the United Way, the Age and Opportunity Bureau, and the Blue Cross and held various executive positions with the Danish Canadian Club, the Scandinavian Centre and the Viking Club. We wish to thank the wonderful staff at West Park Manor, especially Marshall, for their friendship and loving care over the past eight years. A special thanks is also extended to Phyllis Ducharme, Nora Ipsics and Vic and Gwen Pinchin. A private funeral was held to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald Street, Wpg, MB., R3B 2H8, or to a charity of your choice. He had a smile and a twinkle in his eye that all will remember and a helping hand for all he knew. May you rest in peace, dear Dad.
