ANTONIE ANDRUSHKO (nee TESAR) Peacefully, on Saturday, March 24, 2001, at St. Josephs Residence, Antonie Andrushko, beloved grandmother, passed away at the age of 92 years. She is survived by her son-in-law Edward Kowalchuk; two grandchildren, Marilyn Kowalchuk (Ron Podhorodeski) of Victoria, BC and Stephen Kowalchuk (Christine Tambakis) of Winnipeg; great-granddaughter Anna Podhorodeski of Victoria, BC; nephew Joe Tesar (Ann) and children; niece Helene (John Heaps) and children; sister Anna and niece Bozena who live in the Czech Republic. Antonie was predeceased by her husbands, Joe Krayeski, Nick Andrushko; daughter Verna Kowalchuk (nee Krayeski). Antonie was born on April 17, 1908 on a farm in Polishovicha, Czechoslovakia to a family of nine children. She was orphaned during the First World War and spent her childhood working on the farms of various relations. In 1926, at the age of 17, she came to Canada to work as a farm labourer because her brother Frank had previously moved to Manitoba. On a farm near Winnipeg she met Joseph Krayeski and subsequently had her only child, Verna. After the Second World War, the family moved to Winnipeg, where Joe constructed houses, after which they ran a corner grocery store in East Kildonan until Joe died in 1955. In 1965, she married Nicholas Andrushko and the pair spent their retirement travelling, fishing and rock hounding. Nick passed away in 1982. Antonie was very religious and until the age of 88, she would walk every Sunday from her home on Bannerman Avenue to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. She credited her long life to her faith, not science, and would often say as proof that she managed to outlive five of her family doctors. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at St. Josephs Residence for their kindness and caring. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of St. Josephs Residence, 1149 Leila Ave., with a Basilian Father officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations in Antonies memory may be made to St. Josephs Residence. Vichnaya PamYat CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL in care of arrangements, 586-8044.
