GLADYS IRENE JOHNSTON (nee WOKES) March 24, 1915 - March 26, 2001 Peacefully on Monday, March 26, 2001, at the age of 86 years. Gladys Johnston, resident of the Pembina Manitou Health Centre, formerly of Mowbray, Kaleida and Morden, passed away at her residence. Gladys was born March 24, 1915, and grew up in the Kaleida area and attended school there. She married Gordon Thomas Johnston on November 2, 1931, in Snowflake, Man. She was a farmers wife and homemaker for most of her life in the Kaleida area. She liked to sew, do crafts, knit, crochet, and loved flowers and gardening. She decorated many wedding and anniversary cakes and even taught cake decorating. When she retired to Morden, she took up painting, and was a member of The Morden Art Club. She was also a member of the St. Thomas Anglican Church. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Gordon on July 6, 1973, her son Bob on December 18, 1979, son-in-law Alvin Checkley in 1993 and grandson Daryl Checkley in 1990. She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters, Hellen (Alvin) Checkley of Manitou and Ardith Johnston of Winnipeg and one son Morris and his wife Gloria Johnston of Brandon, Man. She also leaves five grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held Thursday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Wiebe Funeral Chapel, Morden with Rev. Ed Maddock officiating. Ash interment will take place at the St. Marys Anglican Church Cemetery, Kaleida, Man., at a later date. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Pembina Manitou Health Centre or the Boundary Trails Health Centre, Morden. Wiebe Funeral Chapel of Morden in care of arrangements. (822-4755).
