JAMES (JACK) SCHINKEL Suddenly, on March 28, 2001 at the age of 77, James Schinkel, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away at the Seven Oaks General Hospital. James is survived by his beloved wife Irene; his sons, Dale of Edmonton, AB, Howard (Janet) of Cochrane, AB; daughters, Pat (Brian Klann) of Winnipeg, Tracey of Winnipeg; and his grandchildren, Amber and Evan Schinkel of Cochrane, AB, and Melanie and Kyle Klann of Winnipeg, MB. He was predeceased by his mother Mathilda in 1952; his father Friedrich in 1956; his brothers, Rheinhold, Paul, Henry, Louie, and sisters, Olga Begalke and Ella Kowalke. James was born in La Broquerie, MB on September 3, 1923 and was raised in the Friedensfeld area. He was a proud veteran of the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry (4th Regiment), serving between 1943 and 1946. After the war, he settled and farmed in the Dencross area of Brokenhead Municipality. Winters were spent in the North, cutting pulp and diamond drilling. On May 6, 1950 he married Irene Borkowsky, and through the years was blessed with his four children. In December of 1959, the family moved to Winnipeg where he began his career in the construction trade as a carpenter. Many of the major buildings in Winnipeg bear the mark of his hammer and chalkline. In 1960, his family moved into "the house that Jack built", and this house remains the "homeplace" and the heart of the family. James was a "Jack"-of-all trades who loved to work outdoors. He was an avid hunter in his earlier years; he loved to garden, to read and to tinker, he had an entertaining sense of humour, he loved to laugh, and had a knack for storytelling. His love for nature, for his pets and his creative abilities were all lovingly passed on to his children and his grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 1 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St., Winnipeg. Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 2 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Lukes Zion Lutheran Church, 2903 McPhillips St., Winnipeg. Interment and a gathering of family and friends will both follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main St., Winnipeg. James will be so sadly missed by his family and friends. Rest in Peace, Dad. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN EDEN FUNERAL HOME 4477 MAIN STREET 338-7111
