MARIA CHIARELLA (BERND) It is with great sorrow we announce the sudden passing of Maria Chiarella at the Grace Hospital on March 28, 2001 quietly and peacefully with family at her side. Maria was predeceased by her parents, Josef Steffen and Margarethe Kaiser; also brothers and sisters in Germany. She is survived by her loving husband of 21 years, Harold; children, Carl Bernd (Rita), Margerita Bernd (Dan), Josef Bernd (Lashia), Dianne Georgakopoulos (Ernie), Wayne Chiarella (Suzanne) grandchildren, Erika, Anton, Elizabeth, Amanda, Rebecca, Dan, Bev, Bill, Tony, Clinton, Sean; great-grandchildren, Victoria, Alex, Dylan, Mathew, Destiny; her brother Walter (Edith) sister Elizabeth (Walter) and several nieces and nephews in Germany. Maria was born in St. Ingbert, Germany on November 15, 1927. She immigrated to Canada in 1949, where she raised her family and worked for 28 years at the Viscount Gort Hotel until she retired to spend her remaining years devoted to her husband and family. Maria was not only a gracious hostess; she also excelled in cooking, baking, and gardening. Knitting was her real talent and her family will cherish forever the fruits of her labour. For a number of years Maria and Harold enjoyed ballroom dancing together with friends. A special time in her life was when she became a Canadian Citizen. We all are grateful and will sadly miss her ever so welcoming phone calls of concern. Maria always took that extra time for everyone. Moms strength was her positive attitude, which was a beacon for all her family. Her grand and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy and she loved them dearly. "Oma although you will be dearly missed you will continue to love in our hearts forever." Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 3 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Active pallbearers will be Dan Bernaerdt, Bill Georgakopoulos, Clinton Chiarella, Anton Walker, Tony Vieira, Gerrid Davis, Anthony Chiarella, Victor Chiarella; honorary pallbearer will be Allan Walker. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 109-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715

  • I miss Oma all the time. I wish we could still sit in her kitchen and watch Golden Girls together while she knits. Every memory we shared was a comfort when I miss her. There are times when I could really use her hug or advice but I am so honoured to have had a woman like this in my life. She was my hero and always will be. - Posted by: Rebecca Walker (Grandaughter) on: Apr 29, 2012
