ORTON WILFRID GRAIN Orton Wilfrid Grain, former Assistant Managing Editor and News Editor of the Winnipeg Free Press, died March 29, 2001 in Vancouver at the age of 96. Born in 1904 at Selkirk, Man., Orton was educated in Winnipeg, attending St. Johns College School. His 46 year newspaper career began with the Winnipeg Tribune in 1923. Five years later he joined the Winnipeg Free Press News staff. During the Second World War he served overseas with the Canadian Army and was in the Normandy invasion. After returning to the Free Press as News Editor, Orton moved in 1956 to Vancouver and was employed on the News Desk of the Vancouver Province until his retirement in 1969. Orton is survived by his wife Meran Elizabeth; daughter Anne Narendra of Bali, Indonesia; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, if desired, a donation could be made to the CNIB, 100 - 5055 Joyce, Vancouver, B.C.
