MARION MCKERLIE (SCHICK) (nee RUTLEDGE) July 6, 1910 - April 2, 2001 On Monday, April 2, 2001, at her residence at Donwood Personal Care Home, Marion McKerlie peacefully passed away at the age of 90 years. She was predeceased by her husband Bill Schick in 1971, sister Irma, and brothers Carvell and Glenn. Marion will be sadly missed by her husband, Jack; sisters, Mabel (Earl) Bell and Hazel Stephenson; son Charles (Margaret) Schick; daughter Sandra (Frank) Litwin; grandchildren, Don (Linda) Schick, Karin Munoz (Schick), Colleen (Jeff) Henning, Donna (Jay) McDonald, Douglas (Leanne) Litwin, Clinton (Melanie) Schick and ten great-grandchildren. Marion was born in Wawanesa, eldest daughter of Clinton and Charlotte Rutledge, and moved to Swan Lake at an early age. After completing Teachers College, Marion taught in rural Manitoba and then Winnipeg, before marrying Bill Schick in 1933. Their son Charlie was born in Edmonton, and once they had returned to Winnipeg and settled in East Kildonan, their daughter Sandra was born. Marion taught Kindergarten in the basement of their home on Leighton, from 1949 - 1955, with a brief interruption when they were evacuated from their home by the Red River during the flood of 1950. In 1955 Marion accepted a job teaching at Angus McKay, where she remained until her retirement. Marion was frequently approached in her later years by former students who remembered her fondly. She was widowed in 1971, and later relocated to North Kildonan, where she remained active with various community groups, John Black Church and socializing with her many friends. In 1972, she renewed an old friendship with Jack McKerlie, who shed known as a youth in Miami, Man., and they were married in 1973. They lived briefly in Regina, but returned to Winnipeg in 1975 to enjoy their retirement. Together they lived a carefree, joyful life, travelling extensively, enjoying a shared love of music, dancing,a and their numerous friends. Health concerns in the past few years saw Jack move into Donwood Personal Care Home, while Marion lived in the adjacent independent housing. One month ago they were granted their fondest wish: that they live together again, when Marion joined Jack in the Personal Care Home. We are so grateful for the peace and happiness she was able to experience this past month, and the family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Donwood Care Home, especially Audrey Jones (Marions niece) and Ida. Marion was known throughout her life for her sense of fun, her laughter and her strong personality. We cherish our memories of her, and will miss her dearly. Funeral service will be held on Friday, April 6 at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St. Interment in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the Glen Eden Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Marions memory to either the Canadian Cancer Society, or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN EDEN FUNERAL HOME 4477 MAIN STREET 338-7111
