Born: Jan 09, 1914

Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryVERA DOROTHY HOLMES (nee GUNTER) January 9, 1914 - April 3, 2001 Mom slipped away, with her son Doug and granddaughter Karen at her side, after a difficult two week struggle at Victoria Hospital. Our family was blessed to have moms son Ted, grandson Bob and his family, and sister Merle arrive from Australia, B.C., and California, and for all of us to have time with mom to say goodbye. Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband John in 1968, infant daughter Gail in 1939, father Earle in 1978 and mother Dorothy in 1993. She is survived by her beloved sister and companion Aileen, her beloved sister Merle (Don) of Sacramento, her sons Lionel (Maureen), Roger, Doug (Wendy) all of Winnipeg and Ted (Helmie) of Denmark, Western Australia. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Bob (Lori) and sons Jason and Jared of Kamloops, Susan (Shawn) and daughters Jasmine, Jamie and Jessie, John (Sharla), Kathy and her children Christopher and Brittany, Karen (Cameron), Kristen and Heidi all of Winnipeg, Govinda, Satyavan and Bodhi of Denmark, Western Australia. Mom was born in Winnipeg to Earle Fisher and Dorothy (nee Marriott) Gunter and was a lifelong resident of Winnipeg and St. Vital, with the exception of seven years in Manitou. She attended John M. King, Norberry and Glenlawn schools. Following graduation, she took her nursing training at the St. Boniface and Selkirk hospitals. Sweethearts from the age of two and three, mom and dad were married on August 18, 1938. They were greatly saddened by the loss of their infant daughter Gail but were blessed with the arrival of their four sons. Moms abiding passion and joy were her love for her husband and children and their growing families, and her two sisters. Although Rogers childhood illness and its devastating impact proved to be a great challenge for mom and dad, they continually rose to the occasion, particularly in their involvement with the Manitoba Development Centre and as two of the six founders of the Manitoba Association for Retarded Children. Mom was an active member of Westworth and St. Vital United Churches, The Eastern Star, School Masters Wives and a founding member of the Lindsay St. Circle. Cremation has taken place. A family graveside service was held at Brookside Cemetery on Friday, April 6, Reverend R. J. Galston officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Veras memory to a charity of their choice. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. H. Domke and to the Victoria 5 North staff for their kindness and compassion. All is one

Although I don’t remember the Holmes family from their time in Manitou (I was too young) I have pictures of myself with Lionel when we were about 2 or 3. I do genealogy so am always interested in photos and history. If Lionel sees this post and would be interested in the photos I would be happy to copy them to him.
