LIONEL RALPH PORUBANEC It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Lionel Ralph Porubanec, peacefully after a brief illness on Friday, April 6, 2001 at the Victoria General Hospital. Lionel had just celebrated his 70th birthday. Lionel is survived by his partner Irene Somers; son Darrell and his wife Margaret and their sons, Murray and Trevor of Kelowna; daughter Linda and her husband Bill Bakensztos of Winnipeg; sister Dianna and her husband Ted Nowicki and their sons, Doug and his wife, and Gary all of Winnipeg. Lionel was predeceased by his first wife Beverly Joy Kashton; father Ignace Porubanec; mother Tecla Bobbee and brother Malcolm. He resided in Winnipeg all his life and in the past 11 years he enjoyed his winters as a snowbird mostly in Arizona. Lionel retired from the City of Winnipeg after 35 dedicated years, where he worked his way from city clerk to superintendent of customer accounts in water works. He loved many activities, one was shooting pool, his reputation as a shark is well known. He was an avid curler, a past president of the Civic Caledonia Curling Club, then a long time member of the Granite. Lionel was also a passionate golfer, playing at the Charleswood and Assiniboine Golf Clubs until joining the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club. He was also passionate about art. Lionel was a self-taught oil painter; his paintings are proudly displayed in over 100 homes. Lionels Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 10 at 1:00 p.m., in Deer Lodge United Church, 2093 Portage Ave. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave. Our family wishes to thank the staff of the third floor at Concordia Hospital and the fifth floor staff at the Victoria Hospital for their loving care of Lionel.
