NORMA ELIZABETH HASLAM It is with great sadness that the family of Norma Elizabeth Haslam (nee Shearer) wish to announce her passing on Friday, April 6, 2001. Our Moms 12 year valiant fight with Breast Cancer was fought with determination, strong inner strength, strong faith, family, and very good friends. Right to the very end Mom believed in her three Fs: family, friends, and faith. Mom was born January 13, 1927 in Winnipeg. In her youth she grew up in the West End and attended Somerset, Principal Sparling, and Daniel McIntyre Schools. In 1953 after saving for a new home, Mom and Dad left the West End and were able to purchase a brand new home in St. Vital to raise the future family. Together that first home became the family home to all of us, and has and will continue to have very special memories. Norma was a person of kindness. She volunteered over the years to many Social Service agencies through canvassing, and volunteered for CancerCare Manitoba during her own ordeal. Church activities and choir participation were a major part of Normas life. She participated in many choral presentations in the St. Pauls United Church choir, and later in the Regents Park United Church choir. Singing brought peace of mind to Mom, and soothed her soul. Mom made many friends and touched many lives during her working years at the Income Tax, and at Varennes School. Mom reached out to individuals she noticed who needed a little word of encouragement or kindness, and found goodness in all. Mom was like a magnet to children in the community who needed some humour, positive words, and T.L.C. Her best times were as a young girl at Winnipeg Beach, as a young woman at West Hawk Lake with her very close girl friends, and later at Grand Beach with her family all around. Predeceasing her were her parents, Alex Shearer (1935), stepfather George Gray (1971), mother Barbara Gray (1991), a son in infancy Kenneth Ross Haslam (1955), mother-in-law Kathleen Haslam (1995), sister-in-law Delores Shearer (1996), and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Left to mourn with unforgettable memories of love, laughter, and humour is her loving husband Jim of 50 years; daughters, Peggy Haslam (Doug), Dawn Courteau (Denis), Diane Haslam-Lambert (Norm) and four very special grandchildren, Patrick, Lauren, and Lyndsay Lambert, and Kenneth Courteau. Brothers, Jack Shearer (Mavis), and Charles Shearer; stepsister Marjorie Lindsay (London, Ontario), and Ted Gray (London, England). Mom obtained strength from having a close loving relationship with her grandchildren. Mom supported their activities and loved it when they came over, and made themselves at home. "Grandma now that youre at peace may you be our guardian angel to help guide us through our enriched lives of being shown how to treat others respectfully, to think positive, and to speak politely. This is what you tried to live your life by, on a day to day basis. We love you, and thank you for your memorable role modelling." Cremation has taken place. A family interment will take place at a later date. A memorial service will be held at Regents Park United Church, 613 St. Marys Rd., on Saturday, April 14 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, it would be appreciated if donations could be made to The Oncology Development Fund at Victoria General Hospital Research Foundation. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Dr. Ian Maxwell and his wonderful, dedicated staff in the Oncology Department at the Victoria Hospital for your compassionate, and committed care during the last 12 years. Thank-you also to the staff on the south 5th floor, who made Moms lengthy stay as comfortable as possible, and for your emotional support during this difficult time. Rest peacefully, Mom. You will forever remain in our hearts, as we will always love you. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
