ERNEST "ROY" WAYGOOD Ernest "Roy" Waygood, RCAF, BSc in Agric, MSc, PhD, FRSC (born October 26, 1918) passed away on April 8, 2001 with his wife and daughter at his side. Roy was 82 years of age and had been living at Haro Park Centre in Vancouver since November, 2000. Roy immigrated to Canada from England in 1932 and worked as a farm hand in Ontario. He attended Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph, Ontario and completed his Master of Science and Doctorate at the University of Toronto. His education was interrupted by the Second World War in which he joined the RCAF as a pilot. His unit was on loan to the RAF and he served in Transport Command flying Mosquitos from Canada to England and then on to Africa. Upon the completion of his education after the War, he joined the Botany Department of McGill University before becoming, in 1954, the Head of the Botany Department at the University of Manitoba, a position he held for 22 years. He wrote many scientific articles in the field of biochemistry and has many students who have continued to contribute enormously to the world of botany and biochemistry. While in Winnipeg, Roy learned the joys of "hobby farming" having horses and hay fields to manage. Many of his students fondly remember "putting up the hay" in early July of each year. Upon his retirement as a Professor Emeritus, Roy moved to Chilliwack, White Rock, New Westminster, and finally settled in Vancouver. Roy is survived by his wife Adoree (whom he married in 1950) and his daughter Pamela of Vancouver; his sister, Ailsa "Mimi" Sutcliffe of Sidney, BC; his nephew Bruce Waygood of Saskatoon; his nephew Roy Waygood and niece Helen Waygood of London, England and cousins, Rhona Hunter and Vera Ross of England. He will be sadly missed. He was well cared for at Haro Park Centre and his family would like to thank all those who helped to make his last few weeks more comfortable. There is no service by his request. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Haro Park Centre, 1233 Haro Street, Vancouver or to the charity of ones choice.
